Seeking Suggestions
Hey, all. It's time to select a town to base my report on. We are looking for a European town with a population similar to Kamloops', but with a greater population density. Towns that have preserved their character and not become grimy industrial centres are best. So far I'm looking at Bruges, Belgium, but I'm looking for as many options as possible. Help me out?

Hi Mark
ReplyDeleteHows the looking going. Heres a book that might be helpful for you. Cities for a small planet. I got it from Dale. If you wanna look at it just talk to me.
Thanks Pat, I'll grab that from you this weekend if you don't need it. Sounds appropriate.
ReplyDeleteMark,
ReplyDeleteThere's a city in Switzerland, called Winterthur. Its pop. is 100,000 with a high density, with good transportation routes.Heres a link to get you started. i hope it helps you out.http://www.swissworld.org/en/geography/towns/winterthur/k
hi,
ReplyDeleteI found a city in germany, called Dessau that has a population just slightly under that of kamloops but twice the density. being a hub for railways and located on a floodplain, it is simmilar to kamloops, but incorporates much more extensive public transit and bike networks.
Or you could look at this website:
http://www.citymayors.com/gratis/german_topcities.html
it has links along the side of the page for lists of cities and their populations.
hope that helps,
ivory
Ivory has a good point. German cities are a prime example of what you're looking for.
ReplyDeleteThe density in many of the cities is high, but the old-town image is definitely preserved in all of them.
I've been all over Germany, and that was what I found to be general. It's so beautiful there, and all the stonework only just contributes to the atmosphere.
Thank you, gentlemen. I'll look into Germany.
ReplyDeleteMark,
ReplyDeleteDid the small quaint city of Winterthur peak your interest?
Yep, it's on the list.
ReplyDeleteMark,
ReplyDeleteYou have been selected to receive me as your mentor/consultant for your English Report. Your topic looks interesting. I am just posting so you know who to come and find if you need info other than Dale. How are you going to do research on these cities. Are we going to visit them this summer???
Come and see me soon to discuss your topic.
Mindy
Thanks Mindy, I'll be in to see you right away.
ReplyDelete(If I can find a big pile of money I'll definitely do some on-site research, but it seems unlikely at this point.)
Hi Mark,
ReplyDeleteIf you are interested in visiting the hometown of Dr. Evil (Bruges) in person, you should check out this site: http://www.tru.ca/cuef.html . "Through the CUEF Steering Committee, students can apply for funding to attend conferences, field trips or competitions."
It would certainly be worth a try.
Thanks Dale, I'll apply and see if they're interested. Can I run my proposal by you when I get it done?
ReplyDeleteAlso, did you remember that bit of trivia off-hand? If so, it's hilarious.
Yes, and yes. I am an old school Bond/ Powers fan and I love to read proposals. ...What?!
